External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met a delegation of fishermen from Tamil Nadu on Thursday (March 13, 2025).
The meeting acquires significance as it comes against the backdrop of India’s “strong protest” against the January 28 firing by the Sri Lankan Navy on 13 Indian fishermen. Subsequently, Sri Lanka arrested 14 more fishermen from Ramanathapuram and seized two boats on February 10.
“Met a fishermen’s delegation from Tamil Nadu led by @annamalai_k this evening in Delhi. Discussed their concerns, with a view to explore a sustainable solution. Their livelihood issues will guide the Government’s approach. Our High Commission will continue to render full support in consular cases,” Mr. Jaishankar said in a social media post after meeting the fishermen.
On January 28, India “lodged a strong protest” after the Sri Lankan Navy fired on Indian fishermen near Delft Island. Out of the 13 fishermen who were on board the vessel, two sustained serious injuries and were taken to Jaffna Teaching Hospital.
Three other fishermen were injured, and were released after treatment. The Ministry of External Affairs said officials from the Indian Consulate in Jaffna visited the injured fishermen at the hospital and promised “all possible assistance” to the victims and their families.
In response, the Sri Lankan Acting High Commissioner in New Delhi was summoned to the South Block, and a “strong protest” was lodged regarding the incident.
“Government of India has always emphasised the need to treat issues pertaining to fishermen in a humane and humanitarian manner, keeping in mind livelihood concerns. The use of force is not acceptable under any circumstances whatsoever,” the MEA had said on 28 January, adding, “Existing understandings between the two Governments in this regard must be strictly observed.” After the arrest of Indian fishermen on 10 February, The Hindu had reported that at least 50 Indian fishermen had been arrested by the Sri Lankan authorities within a fortnight.
