Congress leader and Lok Sabha member from Thiruvananthapuram Shashi Tharoor on Thursday (February 13, 2025) said that U.S. President Donald Trump’s invitation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi was a “significant development” for the country.

“It is a fairly significant matter that our Prime Minister is among the first world leaders to receive an appointment from President Trump. That’s a good sign. If I am not mistaken, he is the fourth head of government to arrive in Washington and the Trump administration is not even one month old,” Mr. Tharoor told reporters in the Parliament complex.

The Thiruvananthapuram MP said that one would have to wait for the official communication on the issues that the two leaders discussed but pointed out that trade tariffs proposed by the U.S. administration, rules regarding H1B visas and the “inhumane” treatment meted out to the illegal Indian were likely to occupy centre stage.

He added that global issues like ending the Russia-Ukraine war and India hosting a summit for Quad countries — a grouping of Australia, India, Japan, and the US — could also be on the table.

“We should await the read-out but we should take some significance out of the fact that this is happening so early in the Trump administration. And as far as India is concerned, our concerns, our issues should therefore be front and centre in President Trump’s awareness,” Mr. Tharoor noted.
