In a surprising development along the India-Bangladesh border, cattle smugglers in West Bengal tried to smuggle cattle wearing Border Security Force (BSF) uniform. The suspects were nabbed by the BSF who were armed with sharp swords and knives.
During multiple operations along the Malda and Murshidabad border areas, the South Bengal Frontier of BSF foiled smuggling attempts of four illegal smugglers.
Three others were arrested near Pannapur Border Outpost of 88th Battalion of BSF on Indo-Bangladesh. These three were reportedly trying to cross the border wearing BSF uniforms. They were armed with two sharp swords and one knife. They also carried a fake plastic gun and were trying to smuggle cattle from India to Bangladesh. Two buffaloes were also recovered from them.
Another smuggler was nabbed with five bags containing over 897 bottles of Phensedyl (cough syrup). A few others managed to flee. During interrogation, he reportedly confessed to being a Bangladeshi national involved in illegal smuggling.
The arrested individuals and seized goods have been handed over to the appropriate authorities for further legal action. The rescued cattle will be handed over to the Dhyan Foundation after e-tagging.
The spokesperson of South Bengal Frontier of BSF asserted that BSF is taking strict measures to prevent smuggling and illegal infiltration. He further said, “BSF is fully committed to eliminate illegal activities on the border. Our jawans are always alert and prepared to foil any attempt at illegal infiltration or smuggling.”
In recent operations along the border, several arrests have been made as the tensions between the neighbouring countries rose after the fall of the Sheikh Hasina regime in Bangladesh.
Seven illegal Bangladeshi national were arrested last week along with three Indian agents who helped in the illegal bordering crossing operations.
A row had also erupted along the borders about the fencing issues as both nations summoned their diplomats. But despite disputes emerging in the Malda Rajshahi and Cooch Behar Lalmonirhat border areas, border guards from both sides have shown restraints and held talks to ease the situation.
