The Indian Union Muslim League on Monday (April 7, 2025) moved the Supreme Court against the Waqf (Amendment) Act of 2025, amending the Waqf Act, 1995.

The IUML, represented by advocates Haris Beeran and Usman Ghani Khan, said the amendments introduced provisions which fundamentally alter the governance, creation, and protection of Waqf properties — Islamic endowments dedicated perpetually to Allah for religious and charitable purposes.

“These amendments, passed by the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha despite widespread opposition, impose arbitrary restrictions, enhance state control, and deviate from the religious essence of Waqf, violating Articles 14, 15, 25, and 26 of the Constitution,” the petition said.

Earlier on Sunday, IUML president K.M. Kader Mohideen said that his party would take legal remedy to protect the Waqf Act.

He told presspersons that the report of the Joint Parliamentary Committee on the Waqf Amendment Bill had been tabled in Parliament. “Several members of the Committee had given dissenting notes against several aspects of the Bill. It was not clear whether the dissenting notes had been accommodated in the JPC report. Strong attempts were being made to curtail the rights of Muslims by adopting the Bill. The IUML was of the view that it was not an amendment but it was aimed at annihilating the Waqf Act,” he said.
