The Union Cabinet, on Friday (March 28, 2025), approved the nutrient-based subsidy (NBS) rates for the upcoming kharif season on phosphatic and potassic (P&K) fertilisers. The budgetary requirement for this subsidy will be ₹37,216.15 crore. “This is approximately ₹13,000 crore more than the budgetary requirement for the rabi season of 2024-25,” Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw told reporters after the Cabinet meeting.

He said the decision would ensure the availability of fertilisers to farmers at subsidised, affordable and reasonable prices. The Centre also aims to rationalise the subsidy on P&K fertilisers in view of the recent trends in the international prices of fertilisers and inputs.

The Cabinet has approved per kg subsidy rate at ₹43.02 for N (nitrogen); ₹43.60 for P (phosphorus); ₹2.38 for K (potash); and ₹ 2.61 for S (sulphur) for the Kharif season. “The subsidy will be provided to the fertiliser companies as per approved and notified rates so that fertilisers are made available to farmers at affordable prices,” the Centre added.
