Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday (April 9, 2025) said that values enshrined by Jainism offer an answer to global challenges of terrorism, war, and environmental degradation. He added that his government was committed to preserving the teachings of the ancient religion.
Speaking at an event marking ‘Navkar Mahamantra Divas’ in the capital, Mr. Modi noted that the influence of Jainism, including idols of Tirthankaras (spiritual teachers), was visible in the new Parliament building. He stated that Jainism recognises the interdependence of all life and therefore prohibits violence in any form, offering profound lessons for peace, harmony, and environmental protection.
The ‘Navkar Mahamantra Divas’ (Navakar World Day) is observed as a spiritual gathering in celebration of harmony, compassion, and self-awareness. Its central mantra pays homage to enlightened beings and encourages reflection on values like self-purification, non-violence, and collective well-being. This year’s observance precedes Mahavir Jayanti on April 10.
Mr. Modi underlined that the philosophy of the Navkar Mantra aligns with the vision of ‘Viksit Bharat’ (Developed India). He reiterated his statement, previously made from the Red Fort, emphasising that a developed India signifies embracing both progress and heritage – becoming a nation that reaches new heights without faltering, while remaining firmly rooted in its traditions.
Highlighting his government’s efforts, Mr. Modi mentioned steps being taken to protect Jain literature, citing the recent declaration of Pali and Prakrit – languages in which many ancient Jain texts are written – as classical languages.
The Prime Minister urged citizens to adopt nine pledges for personal and national well-being: saving water, planting a tree in memory of one’s mother, promoting cleanliness, supporting ‘vocal for local’ initiatives, travelling within India, adopting natural farming methods, pursuing a healthy lifestyle including consuming more millets and reducing edible oil usage by 10%, helping the poor, and incorporating sports and yoga into daily life.
