A day after the Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2025 was passed with a majority vote in both Houses of the Parliament following marathon debate that continued past midnight, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) president Mayawati on Friday (April 4, 2025) said the Bill was passed in a hurry and added that her party will support the Muslim community if the government misuses the law.

”After listening to the ruling and Opposition parties on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill in the Parliament, the conclusion is it would have been better had the Union government given some more time to the people to understand this Bill and cleared all their doubts before introducing this Bill in the House. The sad part is the government has passed this Bill in an extreme hurry, that was not correct. If the government misuses this Bill following its passage, then our party (the BSP) will fully support the Muslim community, meaning we are not in favour of this Bill,” wrote Ms. Mayawati on X.

In a related development to the Waqf Bill, security was tightened across Uttar Pradesh as a precautionary measure with police conducting flag marches on Friday (April 4, 2025) in all 75 districts. Leave taken by police personnel in the State had been cancelled by the department.

In some sensitive districts like Sambhal, Aligarh, Kanpur, Agra, Moradabad, Varanasi, Bahraich and Saharanpur, drone surveillance has also been carried out to monitor the situation.
