The Joint Parliamentary Committee reviewing the legislation on simultaneous elections, in its next meeting scheduled for March 11, has called former Chief Justice of India and Rajya Sabha MP Ranjan Gogoi as one of the witnesses, along with renowned advocate Harish Salve.

The Parliamentary Joint Committee headed by BJP MP P.P. Chaudhary is reviewing the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Ninth Amendment) Bill, 2024, which was introduced in the Lok Sabha on December 17, 2024. The Bill seeks to empower the Election Commission to conduct simultaneous elections for Lok Sabha and all State Assemblies.

In its last meeting, the panel had heard views of another former Chief Justice of India, U.U. Lalit, who had said that the Bill in its present form will not be able to sustain a legal challenge, since it involves curtailing tenure of many State Assemblies. He had recommended a staggered approach.
