CHENNAI Tamil Nadu has the highest share of women borrowers at 44%, as per report released by NITI Aayog on Monday (March 3, 2025).
Southern States have higher shares of women borrowers with at least one live loan in their wallet – Tamil Nadu (44%), Andhra Pradesh (41%), Telangana (35%), Karnataka (34%) as compared to 31% of women at an overall country level as of December 2024, the report titled From Borrowers to Builders: Women’s Role in India’s Financial Growth Story, said.

Tamil Nadu witnessed a 10% compounded annual growth rate in live women borrowers over the last five years, the report said. Maharashtra’s share of women borrowers is 30%, while Rajasthan is at 26%, Madhya Pradesh is 25% and Uttar Pradesh is 23%. Northern and central States (Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh)have witnessed high compounded annual growth rate in live women borrowers over the last 5 years, but their share of women at an overall country level remains low, the report said.

As of December 2024, 27 million women borrowers in India have monitored their credit information report and score with CIBIL, marking a 42% increase from the previous year, it said.
In 2024, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh and Telangana accounted for 49% of all self-monitoring women, as per the report. Tamil Nadu accounted for 11% .

Government of India and Reserve Bank of India have advised banks to strengthen the credit flow to women and to ensure that their share in bank credit is increased to the desired level of 5% or more. The percentage of credit flow to women is 21.12 % of total advance in Tamil Nadu, as per data from State Level Bankers Committee, Tamil Nadu.
