Watch: Olive Ridley turtles are dying – What’s killing them?
Tamil Nadu’s coastline welcomes thousands of Olive Ridley sea turtles returning to nest each year. But in 2025, a devastating crisis unfolded—over 1,400 turtles were found dead, a massive spike compared to previous years. This alarming trend has raised urgent concerns among marine conservationists, fishermen, and environmentalists about the future of both sea turtles and the ocean’s delicate ecosystem.
For coastal communities, the loss is deeply personal. Turtles are sacred guests, tied to their traditions and livelihoods. Without them, the fishing industry itself is at risk. If thousands of turtles die this year, and the trend continues, the ocean will lose its ability to sustain marine life. Future generations may inherit depleted waters, where fish are scarce and ecosystems are on the brink of collapse.
